Michael has invested directly at the security level and indirectly as an asset allocator in alternative and traditional asset classes over his career.
His most recent role, Managing Director and the Head of Alternative Investments at First Republic. Previously Michael was a Managing Director, on the Investment Committee and a board member at APG, a Dutch pension, the Chief Investment Officer at Protege Partners, a portfolio manager and global head of equities at FRM, a multi-strategy investment solutions provider. Prior to that, he was a portfolio manager at Soros, the macro fund, foundation and family office, and at Credit Suisse. Michael started his career as a Real Estate analyst at Morgan Stanley.
As an Adjunct Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia Business School, he created and teaches Institutional Investing. He has researched the impact of AI on Finance for The World Economic Forum, is a former Co-Founder of The Artificial Intelligence in Finance Institute and was an early practitioner of applying machine learning and alternative data to investing, as CIO of MOV37.
Michael is on AIMA’s Global Investor Board, Milken Institute’s Global Capital Markets Advisory Council and on the Michael Price Student Investment Fund’s management advisory council. He is a co-founder of the podcast Improving Alpha: Innovation in Investing, ESG and Technology. Michael is a member of The Economic Club of New York. As a former Chair at CFANY, he received multiple awards, including Volunteer of the Year. Michael is a former co-founder of Project Punch Card, a not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to increase diversity in investing.
Michael is a published author, having written for and been interviewed by The New York Times, international investment books and other media publications. He also testifies as an expert witness. He has a BS from New York University and an MBA from Columbia Business School.
